Give the Gift of Life: Donate Blood

Some quick facts about the importance of blood donation include:

• The average red blood cell transfusion is 3 pints of blood, and just this single donation of blood can save up to 3 lives.
• Millions of donations are needed every year, and in the United States, more than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day to keep up with demand.
• Two types of donations—whole blood Type O-negative and Type AB plasma—are in short supply (in part because of its rarity in the case of Type O-negative) but their utility is vast, as both can be transfused to individuals with other blood types.

But, and perhaps most importantly, despite the fact that about 38% of the American population is eligible to give blood according to Red Cross eligibility criteria, only 2% of people actually donate.^1,2
