"I’ve always thought we have unrealistic expectations of patients to remember all their symptoms and meds over months. StrivePD captures this data, helping them synthesize what’s been happening—beyond just recalling the past two weeks."

Parkinson disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder that affects nearly 10 million people worldwide, is typically managed through a combination of medications, lifestyle changes, and in some cases, surgical interventions. The cornerstone of treatment are medications that primarily target dopamine deficiency, as dopamine-producing neurons progressively degenerate in PD. Many clinicians consider PD a disease among diseases because, as it a type of motor symptoms disorder and a degenerative brain disease.

While there has been little movement in the approval of disease-modifying therapies for PD, there has been enhancements to the personalized care of the disease. A few years ago, the FDA cleared StrivePD, a free disease management application that passively collects daily resting tremor and dyskinesia data via Apple’s Movement Disorder API. Through StrivePD, patients may track their symptoms over time and gain greater insights on how medications and physical activity impact them.

Amanda Hare, DNP, a doctor of nursing practice specialized in movement disorders and medical science liaison at Rune Labs, recently sat down with NeurologyLive® to discuss the build of StrivePD and some of the advantages it offers the PD community. Hare, who has spent the last 5 plus years working with patients with movement disorders, stressed how StrivePD helps patient visualize patterns and trends over time, enhancing both patient self-awareness and clinician insights. Furthermore, he commented that this real-time feedback strengthens the patient-provider relationship, allowing for personalized care adjustments and promoting patient engagement in their own disease management.
