"We care for those who care for children with neurological conditions."

Patients with epilepsy can sometimes display harmful or disruptive behaviors, particularly when communication difficulties are present, which can affect both themselves and others. During the 2024 American Epilepsy Society Annual Meeting, held December 6-10, in Los Angeles, a symposium titled "Harmful and Disruptive Behavior in Epilepsy" delved into these challenges, offering a thorough examination from the perspectives of both patients and caregivers. The session focused on key areas such as behavior assessment, treatment approaches, and effective management strategies, while also emphasizing the importance of compassionate care and practical solutions that integrate clinical knowledge with real-world applicability.

The symposium was designed to provide clinicians with valuable tools to manage harmful and disruptive behaviors in epilepsy. Key learning objectives included assessing problem behaviors, exploring pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options, and approaching difficult situations with empathy. The session began with patient and caregiver insights, followed by expert discussions on behavior evaluation, non-medication strategies, and pharmacological treatments. Interactive case studies and practical applications were led by a multidisciplinary team, culminating in a panel discussion that reinforced the session's main takeaways and encouraged audience participation.

In a recent interview with NeurologyLive® at the AES Annual Meeting, Jessica Nickrand, PhD, the director of programs at the Child Neurology Foundation (CNF), and Allyson Eyermann, the deputy director at CNF, discussed how the organization’s 3 core pillars work together to improve outcomes for pediatric patients with neurological conditions. The duo also addressed challenges in expanding the Neurology Social Services Network, emphasizing the need for collaboration and resource-sharing among organizations to ensure high-quality support for families. Additionally, they discussed how clinicians can utilize CNF’s educational materials and resources to better navigate insurance challenges and provide ongoing support to families.
