"We have the philosophy of no stroke left behind. Find reasons to treat, not reasons to exclude—look for recoverable tissue, not just risks."

The International Stroke Conference (ISC) 2025, organized by the American Heart Association (AHA), is the premier global event dedicated to cerebrovascular disease and brain health. The 3-day meeting offers a comprehensive program featuring the latest research, clinical practices, and advancements in stroke care. Prior to the February 5th kickoff, attendees were able to take part in a pre-conference symposium, which featured specialized sessions, including the State of the Science Stroke Nursing Symposium, focusing on current challenges and innovations in stroke nursing.

Like many of the neurologic conferences, ISC helps facilitate networking among professionals from diverse backgrounds, fostering collaborations and partnerships aimed at advancing stroke care and research. To gain better insights on some of the most notable innovations and developments from this year’s meeting, NeurologyLive® sat down with Andrei Alexandrov, MD, a stroke neurologist who joined as chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in 2023.

Alexandrov, who specializes in the development of novel reperfusion therapies for stroke, provided commentary on the evolving landscape of stroke care, particular focusing on mechanical thrombectomy and its expanding indications. He also emphasized the significance of the MeVO trials, which explore the potential of treating medium-level occlusions, an area once thought to be beyond the reach of current technology. Above all, he highlighted the broader trends of stroke care, noting a shift toward expanding treatment windows and reducing reliance on imaging to exclude patients from treatment.
